One situation that can happen to those who make purchases with their credit card is seeing an error message on the terminal's screen. And, although it's common and can happen to anyone, it's normal to be concerned about the error and what it might mean.

Among the most common mistakes, there is Error 51. But do you know what this error is and what it really means?

Follow our article to learn more about error 51 on the card machine and how to solve this problem.

What is error 51 on the card?

There are several errors that can occur when making a purchase. Each one relates to a different issue. In the case of "error 51," it's not related to the terminal or the customer. It's a card-related error.

Error 51 on a card machine occurs when a purchase is not authorized. In this case, it's recommended to contact the card issuer through their Customer Service Center, the number for which is located on the back of your card.

This error code can be caused by two main reasons: the card's credit limit was exceeded or the transaction was considered suspicious. Contacting your card issuer can provide specific information about the cause of the error and how to resolve it.

Why might this error occur?

Error code 51 is often displayed when the card-issuing financial institution refuses to authorize a purchase for some reason. The most common causes of this issue are exceeding the card limit or when the transaction is deemed suspicious. In these cases, the merchant usually receives the message: "Transaction declined or sale unauthorized. Contact your card issuer."

While these are the most common reasons for error 51, other situations can also cause this code during card purchases. Here are some of them:

  • Your credit card has expired. Always check the expiration date printed on the front of your card.
  • There is suspicion of fraudulent activity on your account.
  • There are overdue invoices that need to be paid to release new purchases.
  • The financial institution that issued the card has ceased its activities.

How to resolve error 51?

If you went to make a purchase and received error 51, there are some steps you can take to resolve your issue.

  • Try again: If you're sure everything is correct, you can try making the payment again with your card. One option here is to try using another card reader to confirm the error isn't with the machine.
  • Try using another card: it's worth trying to resolve the purchase immediately by paying with another credit card, so that the initial problem can be resolved.
  • Contact your card issuer: You should contact them so they can tell you what happened to your card that caused it to be declined and resolve the issue.

If you receive "error 51" due to insufficient credit, you must pay the invoice to release the amount or request a credit limit increase. In the case of a late payment or outstanding bill, you must settle the outstanding balance before making any new purchases.

In the case of unauthorized purchases due to suspicions from the bank, when you contact us you confirm that it is you who is making the purchase and the company will then release the purchase for you.

Other card-related errors

In addition to error 51, there are several errors that can occur when making a purchase with a credit card.

Regarding card errors, some of the most common are:

Error Cause Solution
Error 12 Card failure. Try again or request a replacement card.
Error 16 Invalid card. Request a replacement card.
Error 38 Incorrect password. Contact the bank to release the password.
Error 41 Limit exceeded. Request limit increase.
