First, more and more women are seeking safer and more effective contraceptive methods than the pill, including the IUD (Intrauterine Device). These methods are currently the most sought-after health care options among women.

Ministry of Health

In fact, the Ministry of Health has expanded access to IUDs, with the aim of increasing the rate of use each year.

But what about health plans?

Now, to answer your questions, we've written this article to clarify your rights. Stay tuned!

Family planning and health plan obligations

According to the National Supplementary Health Agency (ANS), health plans are required to cover family planning. But what does that mean?

Health Insurance Covers IUD

These are simply actions that help couples plan for the arrival of their children, as well as prevent unwanted pregnancies. They include:

  • Education: Health professionals provide information and knowledge on how to decide which method to use.
  • Reflections on conception and contraception;
  • Counseling: the professional listens to the needs and desires of the woman, man or couple regarding family planning;

What does the law say about family planning?

Family planning is a right of every citizen and, therefore, you should know what it determines regarding this matter.

  • The Unified Health System (SUS) must include as basic activities: assistance with conception and contraception, prenatal care, childbirth, puerperium and neonatal care, as well as the control and prevention of cancers (cervical-uterine, breast, prostate and penile);
  • Voluntary sterilization is permitted in the following situations: men and women over 25 or with at least two living children. However, there is a minimum period of 60 days between the expression of will and the surgical procedure;

Does the health plan cover the IUD?

Since January 2008, all health plans are required to cover the placement of an IUD, whether hormonal or not.

Procedure

Furthermore, please note that the procedure is covered both for the first placement and for when it is replaced in cases of expiration, age, expulsion, complications, removal due to having decided to become pregnant or any medical indication.

Remove the IUD

However, if the patient regrets having had the IUD inserted and wants to remove it.

What should I do if my health plan denies my chosen method?

If your health plan refuses to cover the method you and your doctor chose after you've completed the waiting period, don't worry.

Coverage is included in the ANS List of Procedures and Health Events and you can claim your rights.

If the answer is negative, contact the ANS Call Center, via the website, by calling Disque ANS (08007019656) or in person at one of the ANS centers.

What are the indications and contraindications of the IUD?

IUD indications

Any sexually active woman who does not wish to become pregnant in the short term can have an IUD inserted.

And this applies to both those who have children and those who have never had any.

First of all, look for a gynecologist so that he can tell you which method is best for you.

Also, don't forget that no contraceptive method is 100% effective and, except for condoms, they do not protect against sexually transmitted diseases.

IUD contraindications

  • Anatomical abnormalities of the uterus
  • Active gynecological infection
  • Uterine cancer: Women with endometrial or cervical cancer should not use an IUD.
  • Gynecological bleeding of unclear origin:
  • Copper IUD: contraindicated in cases of copper allergy.
  • Hormonal IUD: should not be used by women who have had breast cancer in the last 5 years or liver disease, due to its hormones.
